A modern metal-oxide surge arrester (MOA) is the simplest and most inexpensive high-voltage equipment, it is many times simpler and cheaper than, for example, any transformer or circuit breaker. However, it is the surge arrester that causes electric engineers to have an endless number of questions about why so many different characteristics of the surge arrester are needed and how exactly they can be selected for each specific case of application.
