Lightning Overvoltages in High Voltage Switchgear
This electronic book, dated 2025, explores the application of metal-oxide surge arresters and other measures for lightning protection of high voltage switchgear of voltages from 6 to 750 kV. It is intended for employees of design organizations and power grid companies, as well as university students.
A modern metal-oxide surge arrester (MOA) is designed to protect equipment insulation from impulse overvoltages of lightning and switching nature. However, most often, the use of MOA is required for the protection against lightning overvoltages only, and not switching.
Considering switchgear protection against lightning overvoltages, the probability of damage to high voltage equipment installed in a switchgear is determined not only by the distance between the equipment and the MOA but also by many other factors. It turns out that optimizing the MOA installation locations in a switchgear is a serious task, depending on the design of the connected overhead lines, the availability of lightning shield wires on these lines, the grounding impedance of the line's towers, etc. The brochure will help the reader to know all these details better.
